IOW in Partnership

Although the majority of IOW classes are held inside Los Angeles County’s three juvenile halls, partnerships with other organizations and institutions allow IOW teachers to reach a broader population.

Girls & Gangs — In July and August, IOW teachers Gina Loring and Roberta Villa taught 6 week and 8 week classes for Girls & Gangs.  The classes were part of after-school summer activity options organized for G&G’s re-entry services.

New Roads — Monona Wali is now teaching the 7th module (10 week course) of IOW classes at Camp David Gonzales as part of New Roads for New Visions enrichment programming.  At the end of each module, the students read their works at a special “graduation” event.

Men’s Central Jail — For several months, teachers Susan Cuscuna and Scott Budnick have led IOW’s first class at an adult detention facility.  The majority of students participated in the Writing Program at one of the juvenile halls.
