  3. Restorative and Transformative Approach – We believe in restorative and transformative justice principles, emphasizing healing over punishment. We create spaces for individuals to share their stories, repair harm, and build a future rooted in personal growth and accountability. 

  4. Trauma-Informed and Strength-Based – We recognize the profound effects of trauma, incarceration, and adverse impacts caused by various systems. With this in mind, we approach every interaction with empathy, understanding, and care. All staff are trained to be trauma-informed, focus on the strengths of the individual, and be provide services that are culturally sensitive to the diverse populations we serve. 

  5. Community and Connection – We foster a supportive and inclusive community that uplifts system-impacted youth and alumni through mentorship, shared experiences, and collective growth.

  6. Justice and Equity – We advocate for fairness, dignity, and opportunities for system-impacted youth, ensuring that their voices are heard and their stories are valued.

  7. Accountability and Integrity – We hold ourselves accountable to our mission and to those we serve, acting with transparency, honesty, and ethical responsibility.

  8. Empowerment and Leadership – We equip program participants and alumni members with the tools, resources, and confidence to become leaders in their own lives and in their communities.

  9. Collaboration and Partnership – We work alongside educators, artists, justice professionals, and community organizations to create meaningful opportunities and systemic change.

Approaches to Support Our Core Values

  1. Mission-Driven / Mission-Centered – We are deeply committed to reducing the recidivism rate and supporting justice-impacted individuals through writing, mentorship, and advocacy. Our presence in IOW is to be of service to others and to promote the growth and development of those we serve. 

  2. Adaptable, Flexible, and Resourceful – We think creatively, possess a solutions-oriented mindset, and adapt to evolving program needs. Our work and the complex systems we work with are constantly changing. We must be able to evolve and adapt to the changes that are constantly occurring. With a sense of humor, humility, and grace, we remember that our work at IOW must remain mission driven and centered. All staff are committed to a “whatever it takes” approach to support the communities we serve.

  3. Humility – We approach our work with openness, recognizing that we do not have all the answers and that learning is a continuous process. We listen actively, reflect on feedback, and remain receptive to growth. We acknowledge the lived experiences of the youth and alumni we serve, valuing their voices as central to our mission. Our commitment to humility ensures that we lead with empathy, remain adaptable, and approachable, with a sincere smile in our face to promote a safe and warm environment, and prioritize the needs of those we support over personal recognition.

  4. Strong Work Ethic & Integrity – All IOW staff must demonstrates accountability, honesty, and professionalism, especially when handling sensitive youth information.

  5. Collaborative & Team-Oriented – Comfortable working with diverse teams, volunteers, and external partners to achieve program goals.

  6. Culturally Competent & Inclusive – Understands and respects diverse cultural backgrounds, especially those of at-risk/at-promise and formerly incarcerated youth and adults.

  7. Mentorship and Relationship Building – We recognize the power of long-term, supportive relationships in fostering growth and change. By building trust and meaningful connections, we empower system-impacted youth and alumni to navigate challenges and seize opportunities for success. 

  8. Compassion and Empathy-Driven Practices – We lead with compassion, ensuring that every interaction–whether youth, partners, or colleagues–is rooted in empathy and understanding. Our work requires patience, active listening, and the ability to meet individuals where they are in their journey.

We approach challenges with self-awareness, regulate our responses in high-stress situations, and foster a supportive environment where youth, alumni, and staff feel seen, heard, and valued. Through emotional intelligence, we build stronger relationships, enhance communication, and create spaces for healing and growth.

At InsideOUT Writers (IOW), our mission extends beyond creative writing—we foster spaces of healing, empowerment, and second chances for system-impacted youth and alumni. Our core values are the foundation of our work, guiding our approach to mentorship, advocacy, and personal growth.
